"Mapping the World with Art"
If you can draw a line, a squiggle, an egg or a square, I can
teach you to draw the world!
Target age group: grades
5-10 (could be used with motivated 4th)
Time allowance: A full year doing two sessions per week, with
each session being at least an hour. (Co-ops can probably get away with once a week if the session is at least 90 minutes
long and some reading and activities are done at home.)
Description of curriculum:
Each lesson consists of a history reading (one page front and back), a step-by-step map drawing, and additional activities
to supplement the lesson. Activities vary widely and can include extra art projects, games, recipes, crafts, etc. The
reading and the step-by-step map drawing instructions can be printed and used as hand-outs for the students, or can be done
as a presentation by an adult leader.
The readings go in chronological order, following the history of maps and making,
from ancient Babylon to the 1800's. The step-by-step drawings use simple shapes and fun mnemonic techniques to help
the student learn how to draw the world from memory. You don't have to be an artist to have great success with this
curriculum. You just have to be willing to learn and have fun!
